Fiber Tales: Getting to Know Your Yarn

Have you ever fallen in love with a yarn but had no idea what to make with it? Or found a project you wanted to make, only to feel stuck when the recommended yarn was unavailable?

Choosing yarn can feel surprisingly confusing. Matching the yarn weight is only one part of the decision, and color or softness alone cannot tell you how a yarn will behave in the finished fabric.

In this 2.5 hour, hands-on workshop, you will explore how qualities such as fiber content, yarn construction, twist, drape, structure, elasticity, stitch definition, and color influence the finished result. Using a changing selection of popular and new yarns from the shop, you will compare yarns and knitted samples while developing a clearer understanding of what makes a yarn better suited to one project than another.

We will also consider hand-dyed yarns, dye lots, color variation, and the ways solid, tonal, speckled, variegated, light, and dark yarns can affect the appearance of a project.

You will have the opportunity to examine yarns from your own stash that you love but are unsure how to use, consider what types of projects may suit them, and identify what you may want to investigate before making a final choice.

You do not need to memorize every fiber or become a yarn expert. You will leave with a practical way to evaluate yarn, ask more useful questions, and make more informed choices with greater confidence.
