The New Color Work Blanket Sampler

If you’re obsessed with the bold modern blankets in The New Color Work and want to knit one with confidence, this technique-based class is for you.

Over four session, we’ll work through the core skills used across the book—so you can choose any blanket you love and know exactly how to begin and how to keep going. Instead of starting with a full blanket right away, we’ll knit a set of small sampler blocks that teach the “building block” techniques: neat pick-up-and-knit edges, geometric shaping, garter short-row wedges, and clean joining.

You’ll leave with a labeled sampler set you can refer back to, plus a simple personal roadmap for your chosen blanket—so you can start your project immediately after class (and feel confident as you go).

Class 1 — Pick Up & Knit Foundations
We’ll break down how the blankets in The New Color Work are constructed and set up a consistent “house method” for clean edges. You’ll practice picking up stitches neatly along garter edges and around corners, so your modular pieces connect smoothly. You’ll leave with your first sampler pieces started and clear homework to prep for shaping.

Class 2 — Geometric Shaping + Diagonal Edges
You’ll learn the shaping moves that create crisp triangles and bold angles using simple increases and decreases. We’ll also practice picking up stitches along diagonal edges—one of the most important skills for this style of blanket. By the end of class, you’ll have a set of geometric sampler blocks that match and behave the way you want.

Class 3 — Short Rows for Wedges & Movement
We’ll demystify short rows in garter stitch and use them to knit clean wedges and directional shapes. You’ll practice turning confidently, keeping edges tidy, and creating pieces that fit together without gaps. You’ll leave with a wedge-based sampler (and the confidence to use short rows in any of the book’s designs).

Class 4 — Joining, Borders, and Your Blanket Roadmap
You’ll learn a sturdy, tidy joining method (including 3-needle bind-off) and how to keep seams flat and corners sharp. We’ll cover border pickup basics so your finished blanket has a clean, professional edge. Finally, you’ll choose your favorite blanket from the book and create a simple step-by-step roadmap so you can start your project immediately after class.
