| Instructor Bio: | Mary’s needlework life started when she was four. Her grandmother taught her knitting, crocheting, embroidery and origami to help her focus her time and energy while bed ridden with childhood illnesses. It has been a lifelong love affair. In 2014, Mary had surgery to remove a cancered kidney; she was not able to handle her needle-turn-applique projects (which had so many steps of preparations) and was in despair briefly. She remembered the ribbon embroidery that her grandmother showed her long ago. She found a ribbon embroidery (RE) kit which contained the floral pattern on canvas, the multi-colored ribbons and a needle; she could not stop doing one RE-kit project after another; she fell head over heels in love with it. The more she did them, the more she was determined to revive the ribbon stitchery art (once popular in the Court of Versailles in France, Forbidden City in China and as an appliqué technique for clothing and dance regalia among Prairie and Great Lakes Native American tribes), which now has become dormant. She went to China and found reliable manufacturers of high-quality RE kits. Mary brought back a variety (in design and complexity) of RE kits because she anticipated that more people will become interested in learning and applying the stitches she, Stella and Gongjia will teach. Mary wanted to excite people with beautiful results. |
